Microsoft Launches Partnership for Technology Access in Nepal
Program to improve access to technology through micro-credit funding to support e-government programs and development of local ICT initiatives
On June 24, 2009 (Wednesday) Microsoft announced the launch of its program Partnership for Technology Access (PTA) in Nepal in the presence of Manohar Bhattarai, Vice Chairperson, High Level Commission for Information Technology and Kapil Sharma, General Manager of NABIL Bank Ltd.
This announcement is part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Government of Nepal in May 2009 and is being undertaken by Microsoft with Unlimited Technologies Pvt Ltd, its Market Development Partner (MDP) in Nepal, Nabil Bank Ltd and various government agencies.
The partnership will bring a unique Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model of PC ownership for government employees, teachers and students. Utilizing micro-financing and other financial arrangements provided by Nabil Bank Ltd in Nepal it aims to make PC ownership affordable
Juddha Gurung, Member secretary of High Level Commission for Information Technology of Government of Nepal said, “Microsoft shares the Nepalese Government’s vision to spread the benefits of information technology and we are pleased to be working together to make Nepal a showcase for ICT development in the region.
“This program addresses a key requirement of providing IT access and knowledge to Government employees, which will accelerate the use of IT in Government offices.”
PTA is an innovative global initiative that makes technology solutions affordable and relevant for underserved citizens and small business owners through PPPs. PTA draws on the expertise of governments, technology partners, and financial institutions to craft technology solutions that meet citizen needs, invigorate markets, and help achieve public policy goals.
“We’re excited to be part of the Government of Nepal’s efforts to promote ICT as an enabler of growth for the local economy”, said Haja Sheriff, Business Development Director, PTA of Microsoft Corp, at a launch ceremony today. “Microsoft is committed to working with the Government of Nepal, and along with our local MDP, both parties will cooperate in ensuring that opportunities to access to technology is provided to civil servants and Nepal’s e-government master-plan become successful.”
