Report on 2nd Meeting of PASS Nepal chapter at 3rd July, 2009
The Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) is an independent, non-profit association, dedicated to support, educate, and promote the Microsoft SQL Server community internationally.
On the same context Microsoft MDP Nepal and Forum for Information Technology Nepal (FIT) Nepal jointly formed a local PASS community for Nepal. On May 17th. 2009 the first plenary meeting of PASS was organized at Unlimited Building and decided to organize a meeting once a month.
As per this decision, Second PASS Nepal Chapter meeting was held in July 3rd. 2009, at Unlimited building. The key agendas for this meeting were:
· Discuss about the community event for Pass
· Planning the future actions for the community

Reducing the size of your database using Data Compression/Binary Compression in SQL Server 2008
In this meeting 22 the participating SQL Experts were from reputed banks, and development companies operating in Nepal. The meeting was started by Mr. Nutan Marasini by defining “PASS” and why “PASS Nepal Chapter” is started. Then, Mr. Allen Bailochan Tuladhar, Country Manager, Microsoft MDP Nepal, had presented the goals and road map of “PASS”.
Knowledge Sharing for Community was presented by Mr. Nutan Marasini on the topic “Reducing the size of your database using Data compression/binary Compression in SQL Server 2008”. During the presentation, he acquainted, why data compression is essential in database administration. He elaborated on pros and cons about data compression and details on types of data compression and how SQL Server engine handles data compression. Finally he discussed the syntax and the ways of enabling, implementing and maintaining data compression using SQL Server 2008.
About Presenter
Mr. Nutan is a post graduate on management guy and working as a professional (SQL Server 7) since 2002. He is Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) in SQL Server and Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) Web Developer. He is a certified professional since 2003. His long experience in SQL Server development is appreciable. Using SQL as developer for long period he extends his knowledge in administrating section too.
In the meeting all the attendee PASS member had discussed about Mr. Pinale Dave, SQL Server Most Valuable Professional (MVP) trip to Nepal. They decided to share his knowledge and experience with community by organizing the event for whole day.
The attendees of the meeting had decided to have following presentations on Knowledge Sharing for Community session on up- coming PASS Nepal chapter meeting.
1. 1 hour session in Log shipping in SQL Server 2005 and 2008
2. 20 Minute session about Features of different editions of SQL Server 2005 and 2008
Attendees of the meeting were presented the following goodies.
1. Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit edition
2. SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition
3. Microsoft Expression 3 and training resource for Silver light 3.
Finally, the program was concluded by a thanks note from Mr. Allen Bilochan Tuladhar(Country Manager, Microsoft MDP Nepal), to all the respected participants with a assurance that the next meeting will be conducted on 1st,week of August 2009 in the same venue (Unlimited Building) and requested their energetic participation to make it a grand success.
