The nutrition situation of children in Nepal is far from satisfactory. The 2011 Demographic Health Survey carried out by Ministry of Health and Population has revealed that the nutrition situation especially among young children under two years of age is quite poor, with profound, lifelong and irreversible consequences on their survival, growth and development. About 41% of the children are stunted (chronic malnutrition), and 11% of them are wasted (acute malnutrition). The 1,000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s second birthday offer a unique window of opportunity to shape healthier and more prosperous future. The right nutrition and care during this 1,000 day window can have a profound impact on a child’s ability to grow, learn, and rise out of poverty. The Golden 1000 Days initiative of UNICEF Nepal seeks to increase awareness about the importance of the first 1000 days in a child’s life, ultimately reducing the maternal and child mortality through improved health and nutritional status of adolescents, pregnant and lactating women as well as young children.   7375

Overview: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Pakistan has initiated work on SDGs at the sub-national level (provinces). They have set up provincial units for SDG implementation, coordination & monitoring. A new generation of democratically-elected local leaders is creating change, acting as catalysts for development and facing new challenges. UNDP focuses its work in local governance on strengthening the inclusiveness and accountability of sub-national governments, ensuring they have the capacity to manage the opportunities and responsibilities created by decentralization and devolution. UNDP work also addresses access to information, integrity, accountability, transparency, human rights, gender equality, leadership and critical choice capacities, sectoral governance and knowledge management.  7371

Problem:

  • Localizing SDGs beyond the sub-national level is most critical element for an effective implementation mechanism for SDGs
  • District Level systems lack capacities to plan, implement & monitor public service delivery.
  • The collected data is not collated & analyzed for planning purposes.
